Dealing with stress in the workplace

I just got off the phone with an owner of a shop and we talked a little bit about stress and the affects that it has on our mind and body. It is interesting how we are always busy working on our clients, accounts, and employees problems but we never seem to take care of ourselves.

The gentlemen that I spoke with is a hard working guy that seems very organized and has that magical "drive" that is hard to attain. In his case, he has "panic attacks" and it is hard for him to breathe.

Not too long ago Migrain headaches were my pain and it often times brought me to tears. In most cases, a common side affect of whatever pain you have is the lack of ability to concentrate on Anything that is going on around you. I am not a Doctor but I found that sometimes you have to just step away from what you are doing, leave the cell phone at your desk, and give yourself some "me" time.

Some people spend this time reading a book or going on a walk. Others find sports or a social gathering as an opportunity to get away. I personally found that by coaching youth sports I was "forced" to get away from the office on a continous basis and do something both physical as well as mental with kids.

I had talked to my Doctor in the beginning stages of the Migranes and after 5 different medications, a complete overhaul of the diet, and an addition of an excersize program, I found out that I was the key to my own health. I have heard many times that "drunk drivers never get killed" and I wonder if it is because they are not aware of the situation enough to tense up before impact.

In my own business I have tried to keep in mind that no matter how a file is going or what my pipeline is currently doing, I should always remember that "if it is going to happen, it is going to happen whether I freak out about it or not". This does not mean that I do not need to be proactive about it, but in difficult or stressful times it is the individual that remains calm and collected that can have clear reasoning and normally save the day.

If you are stressing out because of money, stress from home, pressure from your boss, have that "nightmare" file, pipeline seems to be dwindling, or any number of things that we all go through remember that taking care of yourself and remaining focused will provide the best results.

Get yourself some "me" time and realize that you are not the only person in this business (be it LO, AE, UW, Processor, or receptionist) that is trying to cope with stress. It comes when times are great just as strong as it comes when times seem tough. Learning to deal with it will see you, your family, and your dreams through any situation.

Good Luck and of course good luck to my friend and his company, you guys are what's good about this industry.

good points Will.

It is EXTREMELY easy to become a king of workaholics in this business. I am as guilty as anyone

Will this is no mystery! Simply have NO PIPELINE and all those problems go away. Ive done it for a long time now, lol.

Seriously, this is an important subject. A friend noticed how tense I was and offered yoga breathing exercises. Also, (sad for the bank account but not for the health,) this past month was one of my slowest but it was about the best Ive felt in a long time. When you wake up an feel great for about 3 minutes, remember what you do and those loans on deadline, then go into a sweat or get indigestion, its time to make changes.

I have joked about it before in here but being a home office, I frequently leave the computers and go outside to play with the dogs or plant something. A few minutes here and there to breath and focus.

Remember that this biz beats the hell out of digging ditches, and that no job is worth DYING over. Let your arms drop to your sides, shake em out, relax and do some deep regulated breathing throughout the day. Maybe, depending on your office policy, some wild group sex. Ive heard thats a good tension reliever.

Will, thanx for the reminder...Too often we worry about things that will never happen. When I used to manage a large chink of a corporation´s people and money, we´ld stress on tight projects and deadlines. I would remind folks to ask themselves "what´s the worst thing that could happen? No one will die if you miss a deadline or your code doesn´t work the first time." Take a break, clear your head, and attack again.

Well said Mr. Tygart. I used ot really let this job get to me, I would take it home with me. If it was a good day at work, then it was a good night at home. If it was a bad day at work, well I´m sure you get it. I find that the best thing to do is leave your files at work. It isn´t fair to your family to be mr/mrs loan at home too. What ever happens at work I keep at work, otherwise if you take all that negativity home with you it affects those closest to you.

by way out there January 28, 2005

STRESS, WHAT STRESS???????????

THERE AIN´T NO FREAKIN STRESS AROUND HERE.

MY PIPELINE IS GONE AND THE FEW THAT ARE LEFT ARE ALL TURN

DOWNS ANYWAY...............STRESS???????????????

ALL LENDERS ARE LIARS ANYWAY...............STRESS??????????

Ya, I know, its a slow day here also

JPM,
Good idea on the ´wild group sex´, but a little difficult to arrange when you work from an office at home and live alone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :(
Thanks Will, I needed the reminder, as I just got off the phone with Long Beach who informed me that they are not allowing $1624 in fees in Had on a loan, as it exceeds their allowable 5% in total fees. Unfortunately, for me, this is a file I´ve worked on for over TWO MONTHS and the loan amt kept getting cut by the lenders. It went from 95% to 85%!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was with another lender and due to close in Dec, when the lender announced they couldn´t do it after all because they couldn´t sell the 2nd!!!!!!!!
Well, I don´t do drugs, but alcohol is a definite possibility, and I could always go stand on the street corner with a sign saying "GROUP SEX AT MY HOUSE, FIRST SERVED, FIRST COME!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Okay gotta go and make a sign...
Later viners!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The hot tub is in the "Anything Goes" area, my favorite haunt. Tell David, Site Admin, that you want access. It's by invitation only, and he has the invites.

Terrie, you must go to "private messages" up top, then "new". David's user name is, oddly enough, David. Send him a PM telling him that you want into my forum, and you are in :) Be warned though... When you get there, I will likely grab your ass.
